Membership campground company Thousand Trails has installed a new RV storage section covered with almost 3,500 solar panels at the Wilderness Lakes Campground in Menifee, California.

With a capacity of 1,469 kW, the entire solar project is expected to generate around 2.4 GWh of green energy per year, according to the company.

Thousand Trails says the project is one of its initiatives towards promoting renewable energy sources and is expected to provide about 50 percent of the campground’s total energy needs. The campground offers over 500 sites and various amenities, including a swimming pool, a clubhouse, hot tubs, game room and a fitness center.

The company collaborated with DSD Renewables and Black Bear Energy to set up the solar panels that span approximately 82,000 square feet and cover the newly constructed RV storage section.

The new storage area has been designed to house rigs of sizes ranging from 30-feet to 45-feet and features controlled access, security cameras and month-to-month availability. The covered storage spaces provide adequate shelter for RVs while also functioning as a solar array with solar panel-topped covers.

Thousand Trails notes that the project’s completion will be marked by an official ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by a tour of the new solar RV storage facility with the Menifee Chamber of Commerce on February 21.

“Along with the many benefits these solar panels provide to our overall environmental initiatives, our guests and members at Thousand Trails Wilderness Lakes can feel confident knowing that the energy they use is coming from a renewable source,” said Monica Ferrer, Senior Director of Energy and Sustainability for Thousand Trails. “We’re thrilled to have a high-end amenity for guests and members that also highlights our ongoing focus on sustainability, renewable energy and environmental awareness.”
