New York and PA Mass Transits order 280 Electric Buses from NFI

The buses will bridge the gap between traditional combustion engines and zero-emission propulsion and reduce NOx emissions up to 50%. It will also reduce particulate matter levels up to 100%, while also reducing fuel consumption and maintenance costs

New Flyer of America Inc. (NFI) has received orders from the New York City Transit Authority and the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority for hybrid-electric transit buses.

NYCT has placed an order for 60 battery-electric, zero-emission Xcelsior CHARGE NG™ forty-foot heavy-duty transit buses, in addition to the previously delivered 15 battery-electric buses. The order will be funded by the Federal Transit Administration.

The Xcelsior CHARGE NG battery-electric bus comes with a lightweight electric traction drive system and integrates up to 525 kWh of power. It facilitates up to 90% energy recovery.

SEPTA has ordered 220 Xcelsior 40-foot, heavy-duty, hybrid-electric transit buses, with an option to purchase up to 120 additional buses under a five-year contract.

The buses feature BAE’s HDS200 hybrid drive propulsion, including the MAPS2 accessory power system which will upgrade SEPTA’s fleet with engine-off features and onboard “Green Zone” technology. The buses will also advance the Bus Revolution program of SEPTA.
