Bus and motor coach firm NFI Group said that its subsidiary New Flyer of America Inc. has received an order for 10 of its battery-electric Xcelsior CHARGE NG forty-foot heavy-duty transit buses from San Mateo County Transit in northern California.

The order also includes 20 ABB 150kWh plug-in chargers, project coordination, and commissioning by NFI Infrastructure Solutions.

SamTrans serves the San Mateo County and parts of San Francisco and Palo Alto, California.

The new order has been placed after SamTrans purchased seven Xcelsior CHARGE NG buses in 2021 and contributes to the agency’s Sustainability Policy.

“SamTrans is one of 11 California agencies to rely on our advanced battery-electric bus and infrastructure solutions to enable the transition to zero emission at scale,” said Chris Stoddart, President, North American Bus and Coach, NFI. “Since 1980, NFI has delivered 263 buses to SamTrans, providing safe and efficient transportation in the region. Today, the agency expands its fleet of Xcelsior CHARGE NG buses, which deliver immediate greenhouse gas reduction, extended range, and enhanced energy recovery.”

The Xcelsior CHARGE NG features batteries which can extend range by 13%, advanced protective battery packaging and a new lightweight electric traction drive system with 90% energy coverage.
