Electrify America and NFI, a North American third-party logistics provider, have opened the newest NFI DC fast charging facility in Ontario, California.
The new charging facility features roughly 7 MW of charging capacity shared across 38 chargers capable of speeds up to 350 kW for compatible trucks.
The charging facility will directly support NFI’s fleet of 50 heavy-duty electric trucks to advance the electrification of the company’s shipping container transportation operations between the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
While the charging stations are open for business, the project won’t be fully completed until later this year – during that time, NFI will also install a 4 MW onsite battery energy storage system coupled with 1 MW of solar power to promote vehicle-grid integration and to reduce stress on the grid.
The charging depot will also feature microgrid functionality, allowing NFI’s heavy-duty vehicles to receive a charge even when utility power is unavailable.
In addition to NFI and Electrify America investments, the project is funded by the Joint Electric Truck Scaling Initiative between the California Air Resources Board, the California Energy Commission, the Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee, the Port of Long Beach, Southern California Edison, and the South Coast Air Quality Management District.
