New York Launches 60 Electric Buses and Installs 17 Autonomous Charging Systems to Deliver 100% Zero Emission Bus Fleet by 2040

By the end of 2025, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority expects to receive an additional 205 electric buses, and negotiations are taking place to secure another 265 electric buses starting in 2027

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the state is launching 60 new electric buses that will operate throughout Queens, Staten Island, and Brooklyn. This move supports the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's goal of operating a 100% zero-emission bus fleet by 2040.

“These new electric buses will play a key role in ensuring New Yorkers can get to where they’re going safely and sustainably,” said Governor Hochul. “Zero-emission buses are becoming the hallmark of our transit systems, demonstrating the importance of building healthy, environmentally friendly cities."

The electric buses feature lightweight electric traction drive systems that allow them to recover up to 90% of their energy when braking. This regenerative braking system not only maximizes energy efficiency but also reduces wear and tear on the brakes.

By the end of 2025, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority expects to receive an additional 205 electric buses, and negotiations are underway to secure another 265 electric buses starting in 2027.

To support this new electric fleet, the New York Power Authority recently completed installing 17 new bus charging points in Queens. Known as autonomous pantograph dispensers, the fast charging systems "dispense" energy through roof-mounted arms that automatically connect with the buses, which are parked underneath the arms.

The Power Authority has also commenced construction on 46 additional autonomous pantograph dispensers throughout Brooklyn and Staten Island, which will be completed by the end of 2024. In addition, the Power Authority has approved a $188 million second installation phase to install another 220 overhead charging systems in Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx, and Brooklyn.

“The New York Power Authority and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority are making significant progress in building out infrastructure to support the electrification of the nation’s largest bus fleet," said Power Authority President and CEO Justin Driscoll. "An influx of 60 new buses and a rapidly increasing number of chargers will set New York City on a firm path to a clean transportation system that will have zero-emission buses traveling through every New York City borough by 2026.”
