Suffolk County Transit in Long Island, New York has selected New Flyer of America to deliver as many as 132 low or zero-carbon emission buses into the fleet.

New Flyer, a subsidiary of NFI Group, is contracted to deliver the battery-electric and hybrid electric buses over a five-year period. The order includes 92 Xcelsior hybrid-electric 35-foot buses and 40 Xcelsior CHARGE NG battery-electric 40-foot models.

Suffolk County Transit operates a network of fixed routes, on-demand zones, and paratransit service in Suffolk County, New York. The new buses are intended to improve service reliability, passenger comfort and long-term operating efficiency for residents across the county.

“This order underscores the value of our platform’s flexibility and dependability,” said Chris Stoddart, President, North American Bus and Coach, NFI, in a statement. “New Flyer’s common Xcelsior platform enables agencies to operate hybrid and battery-electric buses with shared parts, tools, and training—delivering real operational savings while maintaining consistent, high-quality performance.”

Transit systems and bus routes are envisioned by many e-mobility planners as ideal for battery electric due to the regular, predictable route and run times. NFI and New Flyer have provided electric buses to other municipal and public transport services in Toronto, Washington, D.C., Maryland, Atlanta, San Mateo County, California, Westchester County, New York and Central Ohio, among others.

Suffolk County Transit currently operates approximately 25 fixed routes and within two on-demand zones. The routes include Amityville, Bay Shore, East Islip, Farmingdale, Halesite, Long Island Railroad, Patchogue and Riverhead.
