Global shipping and cargo logistics firm DHL Express is electrifying the first part of its U.S. pickup and delivery fleet with 45 new Mercedes-Benz eSprinter vans.

All the vehicles are expected to be delivered into DHL Express fleets by the end of this month. They are being deployed across key metropolitan markets, including Chicago, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, as well as Elizabeth and Moonachie, New Jersey.

These are the first round of eSprinters delivered into the U.S. fleet and extend the international partnership between DHL and Mercedes-Benz.

The new eSprinters offer a 206-mile range, can exceed 240 miles and are the longest-range battery electric vehicles in DHL's U.S. fleet to-date, the company says. The extended capacity makes them ideal for inner city logistics and help expand their use in longer delivery routes.

Founded in the U.S. and now globally headquartered in Germany, parent company DHL moves more than 1.7 billion parcels per year, according to reports.

"Electrifying our fleet is one of the most visible and impactful ways we are moving toward a more sustainable future," said Greg Hewitt, CEO of DHL Express U.S., in a statement. "The Mercedes-Benz eSprinter brings an extended range and proven cargo capabilities that allow us to serve our customers with zero emissions, while also advancing our global goal of more sustainable logistics. These vehicles not only strengthen our operations in major U.S. cities but also set the stage for future electric fleet growth across the Americas."

DHL has installed on-site charging infrastructure at its facilities to help drivers recharge the vans between routes.

The deployment supports DHL's global Sustainability Roadmap, which aims to electrify 66% of its last-mile delivery vehicles by 2030. The effort includes fleet electrification, the expansion of carbon-neutral facilities, and the increased use of sustainable aviation fuels, among other initiatives.

Although the U.S. expansion is new, DHL Express has previously integrated close to 10,000 eSpringers into its global fleet.

"The eSprinter represents the next generation of electric mobility for commercial fleets – combining range, cargo capacity, and reliability in a way that meets the demands of modern logistics," said Jee-Seop Kim, managing director of Mercedes-Benz Vans North America'. "We're proud to see our partnership with DHL Express expand into the U.S., where the eSprinter's performance and versatility will support their high-efficiency operations."
