A Norwegian joint venture on carbon dioxide capture, transport and storage has selected oilfield services company Schlumberger to deploy digital solutions in CO2 sequestration projects.
The Northern Lights Joint Venture will use Schlumberger’s DELFI cognitive E&P environment at its Norwegian CO2 project for the surveillance of CO2 sequestration.
Schlumberger’s digital solutions are used for subsurface characterization and dynamic reservoir simulation, which can aid in understanding storage site capacity. The solutions are also used for planning, appraisals, operations and monitoring.
The DELFI solution provides access to CO2 transportation and storage technology subscriptions and plug-ins while also facilitating the hosting of third-party applications, including the seamless integration with the OSDU Data Platform.
The Northern Lights JV is part of the Longship initiative, which consists of a Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project, covering CO2 transport, capture and storage. Companies involved in the JV include Equinor, Shell and Total Energies.

The Norwegian Parliament endorsed the Longship initiative in January 2021. Backers call it the biggest climate effort in the nation's industrial history. Norway's economy is one of the world's strongest and is partially built on significant oil reserves including offshore drilling in the North Sea.
The technology will be deployed to capture industrial emissions from the air. Operations are expected to start in 2024, with an annual capacity for 1.5 million tons of CO2. It will have the potential for expansion to another 3.5 million tons.
