Ohmium contracted to supply H2 Electrolyzers to Green Ammonia production in Mexico

Sept. 12, 2022
The green hydrogen from the project will facilitate up to 200,000 metric tons of annual production of green ammonia

Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzers firm Ohmium International will supply 343 MW of green hydrogen electrolyzers to Tarafert, a urea fertilizer and green ammonia production facility developer in Mexico.

The PEM electrolyzers will be delivered in three tranches and the first 69 MW are expected by 2025. The first delivery will be on time for Tarafert's project completion.

The green hydrogen from the project will facilitate up to 200,000 metric tons of annual production of green ammonia.

"Utilizing green hydrogen to produce ammonia is a major advantage for our project. Green hydrogen means our ammonia will no longer be subject to the volatile price spikes and pollution inherent in fossil fuel use," explained Jean Perarnaud, CEO of Tarafert. "Ohmium's leading edge, cost-effective, modular PEM technology is the perfect choice for this project, it can scale rapidly and efficiently to support the production expansion in phases."

Ammonia is used in many sectors, including agriculture. Typically the process to create hydrogen and, from that, amoonia, is carbon intensive, but electrolyzers powered by clean energy resources could reduce that carbon footprint.

Ohmium International CEO Arne Ballantine says industrial-level ammonia has been in short supply this year.
