The New York Power Authority (NYPA) has announced that it will be installing energy-efficient LED lighting fixtures in the police headquarters and justice court building in the town of Clarkstown in Rockland County, New York.
The initiative is in line with the goals of the state’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, which seeks to reduce electricity demand by 3 percent annually among participating municipalities, equivalent to 1.8 million households, by 2025.
The project, costing $600,000, will involve the replacement of over 900 interior light fixtures with LEDs and the installation of intelligent zonal lighting controls. Additionally, 10 exterior bollard lights will be replaced with LEDs.
The project will begin in May and is expected to be completed by July. The initiative is expected to save the town $55,000 in annual operation and maintenance costs and help reduce carbon emissions by 26 metric tons annually.
“Clarkstown is delighted to again partner with NYPA on this project,” said Clarkstown Town Supervisor George Hoehmann. “We were the first town in Rockland County to convert our streetlights to LED's, we converted Town Hall, and now—by installing LEDs at our Police Department and Justice Court—we are continuing our commitment to preserve our community’s environment for future generations.”
NYPA notes that buildings are the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the state of New York, making energy efficiency and electrification measures crucial in achieving sustainability. The state is investing over $6.8 billion in decarbonizing buildings through state and utility programs.
By improving energy efficiency, including onsite storage, renewables, and electric vehicle charging equipment, the state aims to reduce on-site energy consumption by 185 trillion British thermal units by 2025, equivalent to powering 1.8 million homes. Energy efficiency work accounts for nearly 75 percent of the clean energy jobs in New York.
The NYPA and Clarktown also teamed up on a LED lighting overhaul city-wide about six years ago.
Last month, NYPA announced that it is partnering with the town of Ramapo in Rockland County to install energy-efficient self-monitoring analysis and reporting technology LED streetlights throughout the town.
The Empire State’s climate investment commitments include $35 billion on about 120 large-scale renewable and transmission grid projects across New York, according to the NYPA. The funding also includes $1 billion for transportation decarbonization initiatives and $6.8 billion on reducing building emissions.
