Dow Taps Univar to Accelerate Decarbonization Across Supply Chain to Meet Sustainability Standards

Aligning with international standards such as ISO 14067 ensures chemical producer Dow Inc. can accurately track GHG emissions across the lifecycle of its products under Univar’s global distribution framework.

Chemical producer Dow Inc. and distributor Univar Solutions are partnering to expand customer access to Dow’s low-carbon products amid growing demand to meet corporate emission reduction goals.

The two companies announced a new long-term agreement Monday that will ensure Dow’s “Decarbia” portfolio, which focuses on sustainability science, will be distributed under Univar’s framework standards geared towards lowering carbon emissions across key markets. This partnership will enable sectors such as food, pharmaceutical, home care, beauty and personal care to utilize materials with more environmentally friendly benefits as opposed to traditional materials.

Aligning with international standards such as ISO 14067 ensures Dow can accurately track greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the lifecycle of its products under this global framework. Dow's tracking under these guidelines, which undergoes international review every five years, is backed by a moderate level of auditing to meet regulatory standards for carbon data.

"By offering third-party verified low-carbon options, we can deliver more impactful supply chain alternatives across our customer base and support meaningful Scope 3 emissions reductions,” stated President and CEO David Jukes of Univar in a statement. “We are well-positioned to bring a comprehensive portfolio of sustainable solutions to market."

Both companies build on an existing, long-term relationship, as Univar distributes many of Dow’s current silicone-related products and coating applications globally. This new agreement marks the next step in their ability to serve and provide sustainable low-carbon solutions while improving their product capabilities.

"We are investing to develop low‑carbon products at scale and to demonstrate that meaningful decarbonization is achievable across the value chain," Brendy Lange, president of performance materials & coatings at Dow, said in a statement.

Lange adds that Dow’s agreement with Univar helps reflect and accelerate that vision towards expanded decarbonization along its value chain.

Dow is also working on decarbonization of its electricity power generation with small modular reactor designer X-Energy to eventually install next-gen nuclear at its Seadrift manufacturing plant on the Texas Gulf Coast. Dow has filed applications with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission for the Seadrift project, with plans to begin commercial operation by 2030.
