Building energy aggregator and virtual power plant developer Maplewell Energy and zinc-battery firm Urban Electric Power are joining forces to provide energy storage and grid resiliency services for commercial and industrial customers.
Urban Electric Power’s rechargable zinz-based energy storage system will be combined with the JANiiT energy management platform offered by Maplewell. The JANiiT system provides real-time demand charge management and demand response for C&I facilities up to 250,000 square feet.
The partnership with Maplewell and Urban Electric Power will enable the capability to offer the customers other grid services including load shifting, shedding and modulation. The partnership will begin with three pilot projects deployed this year.

Maplewell Energy creates virtual power plants, which is energy saved, aggregated and ready to deploy at future times of heavy grid stress. VPPs can help customers and utilities avoid outages, unscheduled load shedding and other challenges, as well as deploy energy into the grid in exchange for revenue or financial savings.
