480-MWh Alamo City Battery Storage Project Uniting CPS Energy, LG Energy Solutions Vertech in Texas
Texan and South Korean paths to energy resiliency and balance will merge in a utility-scale battery storage project in the heart of San Antonio.
Texas-based OCI Energy and San Antonio-based utility CPS Energy have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate with South Korean battery storage giant LG Energy Solutions’ U.S. branch, LG Energy Solution Vertech. The three partners are developing the 120-MW/480-MWh Alamo City Battery Energy Storage System.
Alamo City BESS is located in Bexar County to provide grid services to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) system during peak demand periods.
As part of the MoU, LG Energy Solution Vertech will provide the BESS and energy management technology to OCI Energy, the project developer. CPS Energy, as the off-taker, will commit to purchase energy storage capacity through an agreement to be negotiated with OCI Energy.
"This project integrates our advanced lithium-ion batteries with comprehensive solutions—including system integration, control software, and long-term services, “ said Jaehong Park, President and CEO of LG Energy Solution Vertech. “The deployment of our BESS marks a key milestone in stabilizing the Texas power grid, and we remain committed to advancing grid reliability as we expand our efforts across Texas."
The project is slated to reach commercial operation in 2027 depending on implementation of the relevant agreements.
Texas, already a national leader in wind power and top three in solar, is rising fast in utility-scale battery storage installation. Over the previous four years, the Lone Star State’s operational capacity of grid-connected batteries rose more than 4,100% to 5.7 GW, according to a report by the Texas State Comptroller’s Office.
