Energy storage project developer Jupiter Power has started commercial operations at the 100-MW Tibbits utility-scale battery site in Michigan.

Grid utility Consumers Energy is acquiring the power discharged by the Tibbits Energy Storage Facility in a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA). The four-hour duration battery storage project is in Coldwater Township and will support grid reliability in the Michigan system.

"Tibbits puts Jupiter's total battery storage projects now in operation or under construction at nearly 3 GWh, and with more than 12 GW of new projects in development, we have much more to do – including in Michigan,” said Jack Godshall, Chief Commercial Officer of Jupiter Power.

The battery storage developer earlier this year secured $286 million in financing to complete the Tibbits project and also the Tidwell Prairie in Texas.

Jupiter Power is moving forward with another 100-MW battery storage project, called Voyager, in Saline Township, Michigan. Voyage is also under a long-term PPA with Consumers Energy, which agreed to the Tibbits PPA in 2024.

Jupiter Power, which is funded through a subsidiary of private equity investment firm Blackstone, last year commenced commercial operations for 400 MWh of dispatchable power with the Callisto I battery storage array in central Houston. Callisto I is discharged to provide resiliency benefits to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas grid.
