ENGIE, SunGrow Connect 200-MW/800-MWh Battery Storage Site to Belgian Grid

French-based electric utility developer ENGIE has connected its 200-MW/800-MWh battery energy storage project to the main grid in Belgium.

This is the first phase of the project sited in Vilvoorde. The final phase two is set to grid-connect by the end of the year, with both systems offering grid stability services for the equivalent of 96,000 homes in Belgium

The project utilizes 320 units of Sungrow's PowerTitan liquid-cooled battery storage units.

Chinese-based Sungrow's BESS solutions are engineered with compact design for quick deployment and operational efficiency, both of which are crucial for large-scale infrastructure.

"With the first series of batteries now operational in Vilvoorde, ENGIE is delivering part of the additional flexibility the electricity grid requires to balance supply and demand,” said Vincent Verbeke, CEO of ENGIE Belgium, in a statement. “By working hand in hand with trusted and innovative partners such as Sungrow, we can continue to accelerate the integration of renewables into the grid, and help deliver a more reliable, sustainable and affordable energy system."

European installed battery energy storage capacity is now exceeding 61 GW, according to SolarPower Europe. Nearly 22 GWh of power generation capacity was installed last year, with a majority that being utility-scale systems overcoming a drop in residential battery installations.

The ENGIE and Sungrow cooperation is growing in the BeNeLux region, which is an economically connected and cooperative zone between Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg.

Sungrow also is a global solar power technology firm. Last year, Bloomberg reported that the company had leaped ahead of Longi as the world's most valuable solar firm.
