The first residential battery energy storage system within New York city limits is now installed to complement co-located canopy solar power in the Chinatown district.

Developer Brooklyn SolarWorks installed the 19.6-kWh Briggs & Stratton AccESS energy storage array at a residential property owned by Bruce Langone. This is reportedly the first residential battery storage installation permitted on New York city rooftops, according to the companies.

"We've spent years working with the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) and New York City government agencies to enable residential battery storage for New Yorkers," Sequoya Cross, vice president of energy storage for Briggs & Stratton Energy Solutions, said in a statement. "Our AccESS system is the only residential ESS to receive a Certificate of Approval (COA) from the Fire Department of New York (FDNY). The COA is significant since New York has some of the most stringent fire safety rules for energy storage systems anywhere in the world.”

New York’s strict permitting guidelines for residential BESS systems are aimed at fire prevention. Brooklyn SolarWorks and Briggs & Stratton worked together for eight years navigating the city’s regulatory pathway.

Battery storage systems balance and extend the power duration of intermittent solar generation and offer backup power during grid outages.

"Energy storage, when combined with solar, makes New York City's homes more resilient and strengthens our city's grid," Langone, the building owner, said. "This project has laid the groundwork for millions of families in the five boroughs to take control of their energy needs. It's an honor to host the city's first residential battery system, and I am grateful to Brooklyn SolarWorks and Briggs & Stratton for their persistence in bringing this vision to life."

Although the Langone property is the first permitted for residential battery storage, several years ago an energy storage system was installed at the Brooklyn Public Library.
