Analytics provider for battery energy storage systems (BESS), TWAICE, is partnering with renewable energy company BayWa r.e. to offer its platform to advance the 137.5 MW Alfeld project in Lower Saxony, Germany.

The Alfeld project, which possesses a standalone battery storage capacity of 282 MW, reportedly represents a major addition to Germany’s growing BESS market. The owner, Danish investment group “Scale Fund,” has tapped TWAICE to ensure operational efficiency for long-term success as its BESS fleets continue to grow.

BayWa r.e., which will act as the third-party operations and maintenance (O&M) provider for the Alfeld project, will have TWAICE tools, which claim to provide a more proactive operating model that manages BESS health and prevents outages in vital day-to-day activities.

TWAICE explains that its platform analyze battery systems to identify and correct underperformance quickly or in real time. This is done through predictive analytics, which includes insights into imbalances, recoverable energy and temperature trends, according to a release.

“As gigawatt-hours of new storage come online in Germany each year, the gap between how batteries are monitored and how they should be managed is widening,” said TWAICE CEO Stephan Rohr. “Independent analytics closes that gap.”

By translating this data into critical recommendations, TWAICE claims groups like BayWa r.e. can “move beyond status monitoring” and make more timely decisions. Managing Director Simon Slapka of data services at BayWa r.e. also agrees.

“Managing a growing storage fleet with a large BESS like Alfeld means dealing with more assets, more alarms, and more data sources than ever before,” explained Slapka. “The real challenge is knowing which signals actually matter before they turn into service tickets. TWAICE gives our engineers the head start they need to move from reactive to proactive operations.”

Slapka adds that this ultimately helps drive better long-term performance and revenue gains for investors.
