A Japanese global electrical services giant made a move to strengthen its position in the distributed energy transition by acquiring a San Diego-based microgrid and renewables control software firm.

Yokogawa Electric Corp. acquired all of the outstanding chares of PXiSE Energy Solutions. The acquisition helps Yokogama build on its capabilities in the monitoring and control of both power generation facilities and transmission and distribution system integration with renewables and distributed energy resources (DERs).

PXiSE (pronounced “Pice”) Energy Solutions LLC develops software that enables utilities and other grid operators to deliver reliable and stable power by managing renewables and DERs in real time. This visibility is crucial in an era where bi-directional flow of rooftop solar and microgrids is becoming more common.

“Our market growth will be greatly strengthened thanks to Yokogawa’s global engineering, sales, service, and support network, and Yokogawa will be able to accelerate their expansion into the power delivery and distribution end-use sectors,” Patrick Lee, PXise co-founder and CEO, said. “Together, we look forward to becoming worldwide renewable energy leaders, enabling the clean energy transition.”

Lee and his partners started PXiSE in 2016 on the idea that real-time data from the grid combined with artificial intelligence could help utilities manage the rapidly increasing number of distributed energy resources coming online every year. Since then, the company has delivered more than 1 GW or projects in the U.S., Asia and Oceania.

California itself  is the No. 1 state in the U.S. for installed rooftop solar, and new mandates require it on all new homes. The company has previously a subsidiary of San Diego-based utility and infrastructure firm Sempra.

EnergyTech is focused on the mission critical and large-scale energy users and their sustainability and resiliency goals. These include the commercial and industrial sectors, as well as the military, universities, data centers and microgrids.

Many large-scale energy users such as Fortune 500 companies, and mission-critical users such as military bases, universities, healthcare facilities, public safety and data centers, shifting their energy priorities to reach net-zero carbon goals within the coming decades. These include plans for renewable energy power purchase agreements, but also on-site resiliency projects such as microgrids, combined heat and power, rooftop solar, energy storage, digitalization and building efficiency upgrades.
