The site comprises four projects totalling 620 megawatts (MWdc) of solar PV plus 200 MWh of battery energy storage. The projects –Maverick 1 (173 MWdc), Maverick 4 (137 MWdc), Maverick 6 (131 MWdc with 200 MWh battery storage) and Maverick 7 (179 MWdc)

EDF Renewables North America’s Palen Solar site is now fully operational.

The site comprises four projects totalling 620 megawatts (MWdc) of solar PV plus 200 MWh of battery energy storage. The projects –Maverick 1 (173 MWdc), Maverick 4 (137 MWdc), Maverick 6 (131 MWdc with 200 MWh battery storage) and Maverick 7 (179 MWdc), are located adjacent to one another on unincorporated land in Riverside County, California.

The projects use horizontal single-axis tracking technology and are administered by the Federal Bureau of Land Management.

The projects generate sufficient energy to meet the consumption requirements of up to 217,000 average California homes, equivalent to avoiding over 1 million metric tons of CO2 emissions per year.

“The Maverick projects are the cornerstone of our large-scale solar and storage growth and expertise,” Benoit Rigal, Senior Vice President, Implementation & Projects Management for EDF Renewables North America, said. “The renewable energy industry has experienced significant volatility over the past years battling both unprecedented pandemic and supply chain constraints.  We are excited to now have all four projects operating at full capacity and to contribute to California’s climate goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 40% below 1990 levels by 2030.”

EDF Renewables’ Asset Optimization group will provide the required NERC compliance support, remote monitoring, and balance-of-plant management for the projects to maximize power production.

Constructions on the projects began in December 2020.

EnergyTech is focused on the mission critical and large-scale energy users and their sustainability and resiliency goals. These include the commercial and industrial sectors, as well as the military, universities, data centers and microgrids.

Many large-scale energy users such as Fortune 500 companies, and mission-critical users such as military bases, universities, healthcare facilities, public safety and data centers, shifting their energy priorities to reach net-zero carbon goals within the coming decades. These include plans for renewable energy power purchase agreements, but also on-site resiliency projects such as microgrids, combined heat and power, rooftop solar, energy storage, digitalization and building efficiency upgrades.
