Canadian utility Capital Power has signed a 15-year deal to supply around 30 MW of renewable energy to Shaw Communications from the recently completed 75-MW Clydesdale Solar facility in the municipal district of Taber in Alberta.
The agreement, which took effect in December, also includes 100 percent of the associated greenhouse gas offsets and environmental attributes generated from Shaw’s share of the facility’s output.
The deal is expected to displace around 335,400 tons of carbon dioxide equivalents, which is equivalent to taking more 102,900 cars off the road. Headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Shaw Communications is a telecommunications company that provides telephone, Internet, television, and mobile services.

The Clydesdale Solar facility is Capital Power’s second solar facility to achieve operations in Canada. The facility is expected to produce approximately 170 GWh of renewable energy in the first year of operations.
Combined with a virtual power purchase agreement announced previously, the Clydesdale Solar facility’s capacity is now around 90-percent contracted over a 15-year term.
