Finnish energy equipment firm Wärtsilä will deliver a anaerobic digestion plant to a British waste management project converting municipal waste into biogas.
Wärtsilä’s agreement with Transwaste will focus on supplying a biogas updating solution, the company’s PureGas technology, to upgrade the waste gas at a plant near Hull in the north of England. The Hull plant is projected to produce as much 6 million cubic meters of biogas and inject it into the national gas grid annually.
The plant could be delivered by December. Melton Energy Tech Ltd will be contractor on the project while Paul Winter Consulting Ltd (PWCL) will manage it.
“We have successfully worked in close cooperation with Wärtsilä on a number of previous projects, and we are pleased to continue this cooperation with the latest project,” Chris Ives, of PWCL, said in a statement. “Wärtsilä brings a wealth of technical knowledge and experience which is particular valuable during the pre-construction phase.”

The dry anaerobic digestion plant capable of handling organic matter with a consistency of approximately 20 to 40 percent dry matter. Conventional wet digestion plants can handle a maximum of 20 percent dry matter.
Wärtsilä’s Puregas amine-based, upgrading technology can handle biogas with high concentrations of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). Since the raw biogas for this project is expected to contain higher than normal VOC levels, the Wärtsilä solution will include a flash tank to flash out the VOCs and ensure long amine life.
Wärtsilä acquired the Swedish-based PureGas Solutions in 2017.
