Avangrid Installs First 5 GE Haliade-X Turbines for 806 MW Vineyard Wind I Offshore Wind Project

Once fully operational, the project will feature 62 wind turbines and deliver 806 MW of clean energy - enough to power nearly 400,000 homes and businesses

Avangrid, a sustainable energy company and member of the Iberdrola Group, announced it has installed the first five GE Haliade-X turbines at the Vineyard Wine I project as the company prepares to deliver power from the project to the Massachusetts electric grid.

Projected to be energized in the coming weeks, Vineyard Wind I will deliver approximately 65 MW of clean energy from the five turbines - enough energy to power 30,000 homes and businesses throughout the state. Once fully operational, the project will feature 62 wind turbines and deliver 806 MW of clean energy - enough to power nearly 400,000 homes and businesses.

“Today, we have fully installed the first five turbines of this project, representing a new frontier for climate action and the clean energy revolution in the United States," said Avangrid CEO Pedro Azagra. "We look forward to working through the final technical requirements and flipping the switch to deliver these first green electrons to 30,000 homes and businesses in Massachusetts, proving that with skill, expertise, and perseverance, the dream of offshore wind in America is real.”

Before the project can begin generating power, Avangrid must complete several critical and technical tests, including final testing of the array and export cables, and energization of the offshore substation.

According to Avangrid, Vineyard Wind I remains on track to deliver the first power before the end of 2023.

In total, the project is projected to create 3,600 full-time equivalent job years, save customers $1.4 billion over the first 20 years of operation, and reduce carbon emissions by more than 1.6 million metric tons per year - the equivalent of removing 325,000 passenger vehicles annually.
