Whistling Duck Solar adds 75 MW to Florida Municipal Energy Project
Public utility cooperative Florida Municipal Power Agency is celebrating completion of the 75-MW Whistling Duck Solar Center supporting carbon-free electricity for four communities in the Levy County region.
Florida Municipal Power Agency (FMPA) is working with other Florida municipal electric utilities and developer Origis Energy on the Whistling Duck solar project. It is the fourth solar site in the Florida Municipal Solar Project (FMSP) and phase II of that 300-MW plan.
Homestead, Key West, Lake Worth Beach and Winter Park will receive power from Whistling Duck Solar Energy Center. Homestead, Lake Worth Beach and Winter Park started receiving solar power from Rice Creek Solar Energy Center in December 2024 at the initiation of Phase II of the FMSP.
"As Whistling Duck commences its commercial operations, the Florida Municipal Solar Project can conclude Phase II of its solar expansion across 13 different communities," said Jacob Williams, general manager and CEO of FMPA. "Through this project, we have added 300 total MW of solar energy, which strengthens our ability to provide reliable and cost-effective solar power to our members while supporting long-term price stability for the communities they serve."
Florida ranks third nationally with more than 20 GW of installed solar capacity, according to Solar Energy Industries Association. The Sunshine state possesses enough solar capacity to power more than 2.3 million homes, SEIA estimated.
