Meta Extends D.E. Shaw Partnership with 850 MW of New Clean Energy PPAs
Digital technology giant Meta Platforms is committing to another 850 MW of solar and battery storage through its latest power purchase agreement with renewable energy developer and producer D.E. Shaw Renewable Investments (DESRI).
The three newly procured projects are in Oklahoma (500 MW), Texas (200 MW) and Mississippi (150 MW). This brings DESRI and Meta’s PPAs to projects across nine states and 2,575 MW contracted.
The goal of this expansion, the companies say, is to support Meta’s efforts to add new clean generation capacity to the grid through its “additionality policy.” By helping fund new projects to the grid, the company says it views the concept of partnering with utilities and developers as a fundamental solution to decarbonizing the overall grid resource mix.
As of the end of 2024, Meta revealed that 89 of the 128 projects in its corporate buyer portfolio were operational from long-term PPAs with energy providers to match its electricity use with clean and renewable energy. More than 1,000 MW of the DESRI PPA projects are expected to enter the construction phase this year.
"These projects support Meta's energy commitments, and they will generate significant economic development for local rural economies across the country,” said Hy Martin, chief development officer of DESRI, in a statement. “Our relationship with large companies like Meta is a cornerstone of DESRI's long-term strategy of delivering cost-effective, reliable energy projects to power the U.S. economy's growth."
Meta is one of many major corporations which have committed to the global RE100 Initiative. These companies have pledged to fully offset their electricity consumption with clean power deals.
According to BloombergNEF, global corporate clean power deals dropped to 55.9 GW in 2025, down from a record 62 GW in 2024. Meta and other tech giants, like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon, were reportedly responsible for 49% of that global PPA activity last year.
The PPA doesn't mean the customer is receiving that clean energy directly, but its investment helps finance renewable projects, which can contribute to grid decarbonization. DESRI, which has built a utility-scale solar, wind, and battery storage portfolio across 22 states, looks to help Meta further advance its “net zero emissions” commitment for its value chain by 2030 through renewable energy.
"DESRI has been a valued partner as we work to bring new energy to grids across the United States. This expanded partnership, now spanning nine states, reflects our commitment to supporting the communities where we operate," said Amanda Yang, head of clean and renewable energy at Meta, in a statement.
The expanded partnership is expected to create construction jobs and allocate funding toward high school scholarships for students pursuing careers in clean energy and STEM through the Virginia Clean Energy Community Leaders Scholarship program.
