Solar and Battery Storage Hybrid planned for new Veterans Home in Hawaii
Holu Hou Energy has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) to provide a solar plus battery storage system to provide electricity and grid strength to the future 120-bed Daniel K. Akaka Hawaii State Veterans Home on Oahu.
The renewable energy system is anticipated to be constructed and completed by December and will include 518.8 kW of solar photovoltaics (PV) and 1,305 kWh of battery energy storage. The first patient intake will initiate in spring or summer of 2024.
Pro Circuit Solar and Photonworks Engineering will lead construction of the system, while solar energy generation and battery storage services will be provided by Onyx Renewable Partners under the PPA. Onyx will also sponsor and maintain the solar plus storage systems, thus helping the new State Veterans Home with no initial investments.
“This project highlights our focus on bringing resilient and affordable clean energy to businesses nationwide. The Onyx team is committed to veterans, service members, and military spouses – we are excited to be paying it forward through this initiative," said Mary Beth Mandanas, CEO of Onyx.

According to State Officials, the Veterans Home will offer skilled nursing and intermediate care facility beds to provide long-term care services with geriatric mental health/dementia/Alzheimer’s care, rehabilitation therapies, hospice, respite, and adult day care.
Groundbreaking ceremonies for the Daniel K. Akaka veterans home happened in 2021. The construction has endured some delays due to supply chain shortages and other issues, according to reports.
Nearly three-fourths of more than 100,000 Hawaii-based military veterans live on Oahu, according to news reports. The home is named after the late Akaka, an educator who was elected as Hawaii's first U.S. senator of native Hawaiian ancestry.
