Solar Power Shines at the FIFA World Cup Fan Festivals
Solar unites the world, or at least the World Cup.
Paraphrasing FIFA’s “Football Unites the World” movement, the ultra-successful soccer tournament which played out across North America for about six weeks this summer enlightened and entertained millions of fans. Yes, the happiest fans were those cheering on the Spanish national team which prevailed to win the cup, but a record of nearly seven million people attended the matches and millions more came to celebrate the global football culture happily invading America.
These gatherings included the FIFA World Cup Fan Festival sites at participating cities during the tournament. To renewably illuminate those ongoing parties centered around association football, a Dallas-based distributed energy company kept the lights on, video displays running and inflatable balls rolling with electricity generated from its three-dimensional solar towers at Dallas and Houston sites.
World-Class Testing Ground for Distributed Energy
The Janta Power solar towers delivered on-site power for FIFA Fan Festivals in the East Downtown Houston neighborhood and at the Fair Park Dallas location. Sixteen World Cup matches were played at NRG Stadium in Houston and the AT&T Stadium in the Dallas suburb of Arlington, the latter of which hosted the semifinal where eventual World Cup champ Spain bested favorite France 2-0.
The Fan Festivals in Texas attracted hundreds of thousands of global football-mad enthusiasts who wanted an interactive pre-game experience or just wanted to soak up the celebratory culture even if they didn’t have a ticket to the match.
The Dallas Fan Festival at Fair Park contained four of Janta Power’s JP5K solar towers, each of which integrated 28-kWh battery storage systems to provide temporary on-site power. The solar towers at East Downtown Houston not only served the Fan Festival but will remain to provide distributed energy power locally for about 25 years.
“The World Cup is more than a sporting event—it’s a proving ground for the future of energy infrastructure,” Janta Power founder and CEO Mohammed Njie said in a statement. “By providing clean, quiet power in days instead of months, we’re demonstrating that renewable energy can be delivered where it’s needed most, without sacrificing speed, reliability or performance.”
Solar capacity delivered fast and soccer ready
The vertical Janta solar towers also rotate to enhance resource capacity throughout the day, while the batteries can maintain charge if the sun is obscured by clouds.
FIFA estimates that about 7.7 million fans gathered at the festivals continent-wide, including 537,000-plus on June 24. FIFA initiated the World Cup Fan Festivals 2006 in Germany.
Design and program producer C3 Presents operated the FIFA World Cup Fan Festival at Fair Park in Dallas. The festivals included large video screens to watch matches, live entertainment and interactive features celebrating the sport.
C3 Presents Sustainability Manager Skye Fabrizio was impressed by the speed and scalability of the Janta Power solar towers. The JP5K solar was assembled and put into operation within days.

Njie founded Dallas-based Janta Power several years ago and recently generated global recognition with his company’s pilot project at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. The project was named a winner in the worldwide Airports for Innovation competition, and since then Janta Power has delivered projects with Munich International Airport and beyond.
