U.S. logistics services provider Schneider has announced the arrival of its first battery-electric vehicle (BEV) in Southern California.
The company says it will receive almost 100 Freightliner eCascadias from Daimler Truck North America and plans to have them fully operational by the end of 2023, making Schneider one of the largest BEV fleets in North America.
The Wisconsin-based firm adds that it is building 16 charging stations to power the eCascadias, which will join its Southern California Intermodal operations. Pairing electric trucks with “intermodal services results in a method of freight transportation with extremely low carbon emissions”, it notes.
According to the firm, the eCascadias have the capability to reduce more than 81,000 pounds of CO2 emissions per day, which is equivalent to taking 2,400 gas-powered cars off the road annually.
Schneider says battery-electric trucks will help the company reach its sustainability goals. It aims to reduce CO2 per-mile emissions by 7.5 percent by 2025 and 60 percent by 2035. The firm says it has already achieved more than half of its 2025 goal by reducing per-mile emissions by 5 percent.
