San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) and Bali Express, a full-service provider of truckload, logistics, and cross-border services, have announced the first successful crossing of a Class 8 heavy-duty electric freight truck from the US into Mexico.
This crossing is helping to form a new electric corridor for electric freight shipping and marks a milestone as the binational region heads towards a net zero future.
“Today marks a historic milestone in our journey toward reducing emissions and paving the way for a cleaner energy future,” said Caroline Winn, CEO at SDG&E. “This new electric corridor is a great example of how collaboration can create new and innovative ways to rethink how to propel our transportation systems towards electrification.”
To support this new electric corridor, SDG&E recently installed a charging infrastructure designed to provide reliable and accessible charging options to medium- and heavy-duty electric freight trucks as more Class 8s are expected to make the US-Mexico border crossing.
The chargers were partly funded by a $200,000 grant from the California Energy Commission’s Clean Transportation Program, which has provided over $1 billion to alternative fuel and vehicle technology projects designed to deliver environmental and economic benefits to communities.
“We are thrilled to be working with SDG&E in this historic endeavor. By adding electric freight trucks, we are not only reducing our carbon footprint but also leading the way towards a more sustainable future for freight transportation on both sides of the border,” said Juan Baez, Owner of Bali Express.
