Renewable energy asset developer Ameresco has completed energy and water retrofits at the Massachusetts College of Arts and Design for greater efficiency and conservation.

The upgrades included improved lighting controls, deployment of a building management system, improvements to steam heating, exhaust fan installations, real-time metering deployment and general building code upgrades. A total of 15 energy conservation measures were implemented.

All these energy efficiency improvements were applied across seven campus buildings in Boston.

The upgrades are expected to deliver $436,385 in annual cost savings for MassArt. The savings will enable the university to implement additional academic and infrastructure upgrades.

Ameresco led the design, labor and material procurement, installation, testing and commissioning, measurement and verification, inspection, training and more throughout the project.

“One of the amazing things about working with customers in the higher education space is seeing how they can improve their learning environments from the cost savings that come from clean energy improvements,” said Pete Christakis, SVP of Construction and Operations. “This is a very important step for the university’s future sustainability goals, and we are happy to help to lead the charge.”

Ameresco and MassArt began coordinating the project in 2018. It was completed late last year.

The firm has worked on similar projects at other universities, like Northwestern University, The Medical University of South Carolina and Trent University. Ameresco also has completed numerous renewable energy and efficiency projects at military facilities.
