Borrego completes 15 Solar-Storage projects for AES on East Coast

Energy infrastructure firm Borrego has completed the construction of 15 solar-plus-storage projects for AES Corp in New York and Massachusetts.

Across the projects, the installed solar capacity totals 96 MW and storage totals 50 MW/169 MWh.  It is Borrego's largest storage portfolio built for a single customer to date.

The projects are also one of Borrego's first DC-coupled solar-plus-storage installations, which generate up to 30% additional annual energy output at the same interconnection cost as without the storage component.

The solar-plus-storage systems size ranges from 1.6 MW to 12 MW (solar) and 910 KW/1.7 MWh to 9 MW/17 MWh (storage). Once interconnected, the projects will generate clean energy enough to power about 10,885 homes annually and offset 82,659 metric tons of CO2 emissions.

The projects take advantage of renewable energy state incentives. They also represent use cases, like minimizing system peak demand through the Solar Massachusetts Renewable Target (SMART) program and maximizing time-value of the plant's energy production under the NY Value of Distributed Energy Resource (VDER) tariff.

"Being an early adopter of energy storage and solar-plus-storage technologies has not been without its challenges, but the completion of the AES portfolio has made it all worthwhile," said John duPont, Vice President of solutions at Borrego. "We collaborated with our product partners for years to develop and test the DC-coupled system hardware and energy management system controls that will enable these plants to deliver more solar generation per facility than was previously possible in this market."

Borrego has offices and projects across the country. Earlier this year, Data center provider Markley Group has signed a community solar power purchase agreement (PPA) with Borrego for the large-scale renewable energy projects in the U.S. 

Markley will buy half of the power from 80 MW of community solar projects in the Eversource utility territory, developed by Borrego.
