Nopetro Renewables Constructing $40M Landfill Gas to RNG Production Facility in Florida

Nopetro Renewables, a developer and operator of renewable natural gas (RNG) projects in North America, has broken ground on its newest landfill gas to RNG facility in Vero Beach, Florida.

The $40 million facility – named Vero Beach Nopetro Eco District – is projected to initially produce 3 million gallons of RNG annually and prevent 30,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions – the equivalent of eliminating emissions from 4,300 passenger cars.

The project is expected to be operational in early 2025, and more than 40 local jobs will be created throughout construction and operation. Mead & Hunt, an architectural, engineering, planning, and construction services firm, has been tapped to design and construct the facility.

“This facility marks a significant milestone for Nopetro and a monumental step toward unlocking sustainable opportunities in Florida – and across North America – as we transform waste into a valuable energy resource,” said Jorge Herrera, CEO of Nopetro.

The new facility will receive landfill gas generated from organic waste decay in landfills and refine it into RNG. The RNG will go through a purification process to make it pipeline-ready – creating a cleaner fuel alternative for buses and trucks.

Nopetro estimates that the facility could provide nearly 80% of the natural gas used in the region and offset fossil-based natural gas demand throughout the community.
