Adapture Renewables, a utility-scale solar and energy storage project developer, owner and operator, has announced the completion and commercial operation of a 14.6 MW solar project, Rivanna Solar in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The project is within Dominion Energy’s and PJM Interconnection’s territories. It is expected to produce over 21,000 MWh of clean energy annually, enough to power many homes and businesses across the region, and help Virginia achieve 100 percent clean energy to support local and regional needs.

It is Adapture Renewables’ first project in Virginia and within the Dominion and PJM grids. It will supply power into the Dominion distribution system via an existing substation, according to earlier reports..

“Rivanna Solar will contribute to Virginia’s goal of using clean power to meet surging demand for energy from rapidly growing data center capacity,” said Zack Zoller, VP of Engineering, Procurement and Construction at Adapture Renewables. "Having successfully navigated development through the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, this project reinforces our commitment to resilient, sustainable energy projects that serve local communities."

The project is funded by incentives under the Inflation Reduction Act and involves partnerships with local contractors, the Charlottesville community, and the landowner. The project is expected to stimulate local economic growth, generating over $2 million in state and local taxes over the system’s lifetime and support over 150 local jobs during its development and construction phases.

The land is anticipated to continue with timber farming once the solar farm’s operational term is completed.

The original concept of Rivanna Solar dates back to 2016, when SolUnesco secured a site in Albemarle County. It was sold to Apex Clean Energy in 2018 as part of the larger acquisition of 425 MW in Virginia solar developments, according to reports.

Adapture Renewables develops and has completed numerous solar projects in the U.S.
